Hunting Hawk

Finger woven sashes made from inner strands of tree bark have been found in New England & dated to 3,000 years old. Initially sashes were simply used to lash hide clothing to the body. But after learning to finger weave with soft animal hair & learning what natural resources to color the hair with the sashes became much more. With different colors, came different patterns to what finger weaving is today. These Sashes were traditionally worn by Native American Indians, French Canadian Voyageurs & Buckskinners.
About my Sashes
I use virgin rug wool imported from Scotland for strength and a fuller look to my Sashes. Virgin means it doesn't have recycled wool from old blankets, sweaters, etc. Wool sashes are best kept in a cedar box or with cedar chips to keep moths & other critters from them. Properly worn around the waist the end of the tousle should come to about the knees. Most tribes/nations wear their sash tied on the left when at peace & on the right when at war. Though Shawnee I am adopted Cherokee Bird Clan so my finger weaving has a Cherokee influence. My sashes can be seen in two movies, at the Qualla Boundary Museum and in the collections of the Smithsonian, National Museum of the American Indian.
